A Brief History

The town of Bodega was name after J.F. de la Bodega a Spanish explorer in 1775. In 1840, Captain Stephen Smith sailed along the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco and noticed all the timber growing along the coast and considered harvesting it. Other areas were shipping timber to San Francisco and he saw this as a great business oppotunity. It is located southwest of Bodega Bay and the Sonoma County Coast.

In 1843, Captain Smith returned to California with all the machinery necessary to start up a sawmill. Bodega suited him well with its abundance source of wood and a nearby for shipping. He recruited a dozen settlers from San Francisco and built the areas first sawmill in the redwoods east of the town of Bodega on Salmon Creek.He then married fifteen year old Manuela Torres a Peruvian and became a Mexican Citizen in order to receive the land grant. In 1844, Captain Smith successfully petioned the Mexican Govenor of California and was granted almost 36,000 acres.

Captain Smith arrived with a steam engine in 1846 for the first steam powered mill. He raised the first American flag in Bodega that year. Following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 the United States acquired the Bodega Rancho along with other ranchos throughout California.

The town of Bodega grew to its largest size around the turn of the century and remains under 100 residence today.

Today, the quaint little town of Bodega lies approximately 63 miles north of San Francisco and 16 miles west of Santa Rosa. Location of other cities and communities can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
