A Brief History of Monte Rio
In
1876, the railroad reached Monte Rio, linking the Russian River
town to outlying areas. The lumber mill was the chief commercial
activity. In 1910 the Northwestern Pacific Railroad completed

line introduced more tourists. The hotel business boomed, and
dance halls and saloons were established. As the tourist travel

When the lumber industry faltered, the existing lumber mills began to close and
Monte Rio almost became a ghost town.
Today Monte Rio is home to primarily permanent residences and traces of the railroad
and its history is long gone. Monte Rio is also the home of the Bohemian Grove
gathering, which attracts prominent figures in July of each year. During the
heavy rains, Monte Rio is susceptible to flooding when the Russian River overflows
its banks.
Monte Rio is 4 miles west Guerneville on Highway 116 and 7 miles north of Occidental.
