A Brief History of Duncans Mills
Duncans Mills was once an important part
of the Russian River logging industry.
This former lumber town gets its name from the lumber mill
built by Samuel and Alexander Duncan in the mid-1800s. Originally
part of the Don Muniz Land Grant, it was the railroad that
put Duncans Mills on the map. The arrival of the railroad in
1876 introduced more visitors and made it possible to ship
large quantities of lumber. At the time, Duncans Mills consisted
of a hotel, post office and four saloons. Little has changed
on this popular stop on the way to the coast, except that the
saloons have been replaced with wine country specialty shops
and a fine restaurant.
The railroad ceased in the 1920s with the near depletion of trees, a fire that
spread from nearby Guerneville to the Pacific Coast, and the growing use of the
automobile. Today there are remnants of the good old days with original railroad
cars from the Northwest Pacific Railroad and a depot for the visitor to explore.
Duncans Mills is located 7 miles west of Guerneville on Highway 116 and 5 miles
west of Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean. Location of other cities and communities
can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
