A Brief History of Guerneville
The first settlers to arrive in Guerneville during the 1850s
were of American and European origin. Prior to that, Pomo and
Miwok Indians inhabited the land by the lower Russian River.
Guerneville was named after George E. Guerne. With an abundance
of redwoods and expanding railroad, Guerneville's logging industry
thrived. Guerneville was also known as "Stumptown" because
of all the logging activities and the remaining stumps.
However, the supply was exhausted by 1900 after all of the virgin redwoods were
cut. The land was then planted into other crops such as hops, prunes, tobacco
and eventually grapes.
Over the years, Guerneville has evolved into a popular resort area with its proximity
to the Russian River and the beautiful Sonoma Coast. Its main street is lined
with candy shops, coffeehouses, vintage bookstores and the occasional art gallery.
Newer redwood growth has been left intact, as evidenced by Armstrong Woods-a
great place for a leisurely nature walk. The town is also home of the annual
Russian River Blues Festival.
With its carefree atmosphere, it's no wonder Guerneville attracts all sorts of
artists who sell their pottery and other crafts. The community is also gay and
lesbian friendly, with special events geared toward this crowd.
Guerneville is located 78 miles north of San Francisco, 15 miles northwest of
Sebastopol on Highway 116 and 12 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and Jenner.
