A Brief History Windsor is Sonoma County's youngest and fastest-growing community. Though incorporated as recently as 1992, Windsor's history dates back to the 19th century. It emerged as an agricultural town with rolling hills and plains. Hiram Lewis, an early settler from England, said the land reminded him of the English countryside surrounding Windsor Castle. Hence, the town's name.
As surrounding cities grew, the historic agricultural center of Windsor
fell into decline. But the new millennium brings a revival of the old
downtown featuring new condominiums along with retail shops with upstairs
apartments. In the outlying area, hundreds of new single-family homes
have been built since the early 1990s. These are typically 3- to 5- bedroom
homes on approximately 6,000-square-foot lots.
Windsor's family-oriented neighborhoods have been built around grassy
parks with playgrounds and walking paths. A single school district helps
promote a sense of unity among residents who consider the town a great
place to raise children.
Activities abound for the young and young-at-heart. To name a few,
an eight-screen theatre multiplex, golf courses and a bowling alley.
Also nearby is Lake Sonoma, many wineries offering tours and tasting,
and mountains with peaceful hiking and equestrian trails. Windsor is
also the home of the spectacular Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Festival,
which draws a large crowd each year.
Windsor is approximately 10 miles north of Santa Rosa on Highway 101
and 10 miles south of Healdsburg. It is approximately 64 miles north
of San Francisco. Location of other cities and communities can be found
on the Map of Sonoma County.
