A Brief history of Bodega Bay
The coastal town
of Bodega Bay has a rich and diverse history and is located on
the Sonoma County Coast. Before white settlements were established in
the 1800s, the Miwok, Pomo and other Coastal Indians lead a peaceful
lifestyle here. Sir Francis Drake landed near Bodega Bay in 1579. Bodega
Bay was named after a Spanish captain who sailed into the bay in 1775.
Around 1812, the Russians established Fort Ross 24 miles north of Bodega
Bay for fur trapping.
By the mid-1850's, Mexico had gained independence
from Spain and granted the land to Mexican citizens and soldiers. Bodega
Bay was the home to the first steam-powered sawmill established by Captain
Stephen Smith. Wood was abundant with a large supply of timber nearby.
Captain Smith became a Mexican citizen and was given a land grant called
Rancho Bodega.
Bodega Bay is the
home of the annual Fisherman's Festival and provided the setting of Alfred Hitchcock's
famous movie the "The Birds"in 1963. This is Bodega Bay's claim to
fame. Other films partially filed in the area were "The Pack" in 1977
and "TheGoonies" in 1985. There
is also a marine laboratory located here. Bodega Bay is known for activities
such as fishing, boating, bird watching, fine restaurants or just relaxing.
Bodega Bay is located 68 miles north of San Francisco on Highway
1 or by traveling 25 miles west on Highway 12 from Santa Rosa.
Location of other cities and communities can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
