A Brief History of Healdsburg
Healdsburg, one of Sonoma County's older cities, was originally home
to the Pomo Indians. However, the years following the Gold Rush brought
many new settlers who established farms and trading posts. Healdsburg
is named for Harmon Heald, an entrepreneur from Ohio who built a store
and a post office in what is now downtown Healdsburg. Present-day Healdsburg
continues to thrive while maintaining the small-town charm of a bygone
era.
The economic heart of Northern Sonoma County, Healdsburg is a tourist
haven with no shortage of family activities. The nearby Russian River
and Lake Sonoma offer water recreation including fishing, boating, canoe
trips and swimming. Healdsburg is also in the vicinity of Dry Creek and
Alexander Valley, whose vineyards produce fine wine. Many local wineries
offer tasting and tours. Another favorite pastime is bicycling on wine
country roads that offer challenging but scenic rides.
The rich cultural heritage of Healdsburg is preserved by the historic
town plaza with its quaint storefronts, Queen Anne period houses and
buildings influenced by Mediterranean styles. Downtown Healdsburg features
many newly renovated family-owned shops, cafes and restaurants in and
around the central town plaza. There are enough antique stores to fill
a whole day browsing accessories of yesteryear (referred to as "antiquing").
Various galleries and museums showcase fine art of every kind. Throughout
the year, there are a variety of cultural events like the Wine and Art
Festival and jazz concerts.
Nestled between Fitch Mountain to the east and a low range of mountains
to the west, Healdsburg is located 75 miles north of San Francisco (15
miles north of Santa Rosa), off Highway 101. Location of other cities
and communities can be found on the Map
of Sonoma County.
