A Brief History of Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park is the third largest city in Sonoma County and was built from scratch in the late 1950s. The area was originally part of a land grant from General Vallejo in 1844 called the Rancho Cotate. Gradually, the Rancho was broken up into smaller areas that were sold separately.

As in everywhere throughout Sonoma County, Rohnert Park had a small tribe of Indians who lived in a village called Kotate just north of the city. This Indian group was part of the Coast Miwok Indians. The valley was an ideal place for grazing and farming. Waldo Emerson Rohnert purchased his ranch in 1929.

He transformed his ranch into the largest seed growing facility in the west in association with C. C. Morse Company. Later it was transformed into a experimental seed farm second only Luther Burbank's famous gardens in Santa Rosa and was one of the first planned communities in the United States. It was incorporated on August 28, 1962.

Present-day Rohnert Park has an array of churches, stores and parks in its neighborhoods. Rohnert Park also has a performing arts and civic center. The city is home to Sonoma State University. Hewlett Packard and Pacific Bell are located here. Rohnert Park is within commuting distance to San Francisco and has a reputation for being energetic, innovative, and popular with families and retirees.

Rohnert Park halfway between Petaluma to the south and Santa Rosa to the north and adjacent to Cotati. It is approximately 45 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101. Rohnert Park straddles Highway 101. Location of other cities and communities can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
