A Brief History of Camp Meeker
Camp Meeker was founded by Melvin Cyrus Meeker.
It is located in western Sonoma County and consists
of approximately
350 homes.
Originally it was logging camp and it was know as Meeker
in 1876 and later named Camp Meeker for the founder
who was an early settler and lumberman
When the supply of lumber diminished, Camp Meeker
became a summer resort for travelers from San Francisco
to to escape the cold summer weather. The Northwestern
Pacific Railroad brought the tourists in and the lumber
out on the narrow gauge.
Many resorts flourished in the Russian River area to accommodate
the tourists including the Hotel Rusticano was located in Camp
Meeker and advertised croquet, tennis, dancing and bowling.
M.C. "Boss" divided up the surrounding land and sold
off parcels of land. Some of the them were purchased sight unseen
for as little as $20.00. These lots were purchased to build summer
homes.
Today Camp Meeker is a year around community which has its own
volunteer fire department and post office and is located approximately
72 miles north of San Francisco and 17 miles east of Santa Rosa. Location
of other cities and communities can be found on the Map
of Sonoma County.
