"We would like to express our deepest thanks to you for all of your recent efforts in selling both of our mother's houses. However, your professionalism and honestly (as well as you hand holding) made our experience enjoyable. We still can't figure out how you managed to place two properties on the market at about the same time, find buyers, and have them complete escrow within one week of each other."

A Brief History of Occidental

The town of Occidental was founded in 1876. Occidental is tucked in a valley between the Pacific Ocean and Sebastopol in the unincorporated area of Western Sonoma County. An abundance of giant redwoods made logging the the primary occupation of the area's first settlers.

The completion of the North Pacific Coast Railroad in 1876 enabled the loggers to transport lumber to San Francisco. It also brought furthered development in Occidental by bringing more people to the town.

Occidental was also known as Howard's Station. This forest village soon became a popular summer vacation spot. It was warm enough for San Franciscans to escape the fog and cool enough to also attract visitors from the inland valley. Enterprising local women established a tradition of fine Italian cooking as they prepared meals for loggers, rail workers and passengers.

Rich in history and culture, Occidental retains its small-town charm. It currently features several Italian restaurants, quaint bed and breakfasts, cafes and coffeehouses. This arts and crafts enclave is highlighted in the annual Sonoma County Art Trails Tour. The Occidental Redwood Arts Council presents concerts featuring local and world-renowned performers. The Occidental Community Choir performs its original music here several times a year.

Occidental is located west of Sebastopol and east of the Pacific Ocean. It can be accessed via Sebastopol, Monte Rio or Santa Rosa. Location of other cities and communities can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
