A Brief History of Glen Ellen

As with most of the other communities in the "Valley of Moon," the first inhabitants of the Glen Ellen region were Indians. Then came settlers of Mexican descent. Glen Ellen was part of a Mexican land grant controlled by General Marianno Vallejo. Early settlers were given part of the land grant, which was the beginning of what is now known as Glen Ellen.

In the early 1800's, railroads were established linked the valley towns and extended to San Francisco. The ferry transported travelers from San Francisco to Sausalito and further north to Petaluma at Sonoma Landing. The Valley of the Moon then became a popular summer travel destination. Glen Ellen accommodated these vacationers with various hotels and resorts

Glen Ellen became home to more people after the local railroad ceased operation. Touring through present-day Glen Ellen one can find friendly mom-and-pop stores, craft shops, coffeehouses and wineries. The village center has maintained its signature rural feel and bucolic surroundings.

Nestled in the hills and enshrouded by trees, it's no wonder why literary figure Jack London chose this wine country retreat to escape the bustle of the more urban East Bay. Jack London Park and Jack London's Wolf house are indeed notable historic landmarks in Glen Ellen. It is also one of many places where premium wine originates.

To the north of Glen Ellen are Kenwood and Santa Rosa, and to the south are the unincorporated outlying areas of Sonoma: Boyes Hot Springs, El Verano, and Agua Caliente. Glen Ellen is 16 miles east of Santa Rosa and 12 miles west of Sonoma on Highway 12. Location of other cities and communities can be found on the Map of Sonoma County.
