A Brief History of Kenwood
Driving east from Santa Rosa on the Valley of the Moon Highway will bring you to the small rural town of Kenwood. Kenwood is one of many areas in Sonoma County that flourished in the 1800s when the railroad was established. The historic Kenwood depot, now used as a community hall, once served as a railroad stop between Santa Rosa and Sonoma.
As with much of Sonoma County, Indians were the first inhabitants. After
1834 and the founding of the Presidio of Sonoma, the Indian tribes
of Northern California suffered from smallpox and cholera which reduced
their population significantly. Then the American and European settlers
came and developed the area primarily for agriculture.
These days, Kenwood remains a quiet community of ranch house neighborhoods
surrounded by premium vineyards. Kenwood is noted for its wildly unique
way of celebrating the Fourth of July-the annual Pillow Fights.
Kenwood is located 16 miles west of Sonoma and 12 miles east of Santa
Rosa on Highway 12. Location of other cities and communities can
be found on the Map of Sonoma
County.
