A Brief History of Sonoma

The city and the home of the Mission San Francisco de Solano was established in 1823 by Father Jose Altmira. In 1834, General Mariano Vallejo took in the mission lands and built a small town and fort. At Sonoma, Spain's and later Mexico's reach into California ended with the construction of the mission, barracks and the home of Mariano Vallejo. In 1846, the plaza was the site of the Bear Flag Rebellion and the declaration of California's independence from Mexico. This rebellion lasted for 25 days.

Sonoma incorporated for the second time in 1881 and many settlers opted to move north of San Francisco. Sonoma is probably the most widely recognized area of Sonoma County and the surrounding Sonoma Valley, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is best known for its award-winning wines and wineries. Sonoma Valley wineries provide a taste of local history along with the fruit of the vine.

In addition to fine wineries, the city is known for its quaint downtown. The City Hall and some storefronts still have their original facades, though most buildings are promptly renovated when necessary. A replica of the 1880 Railroad Depot, just north of the historic central plaza, is home to the Sonoma Valley Historical Society Museum, which displays many treasures of the past.

The valley is home to numerous small farms, fabulous Wine Country restaurants, unique historical sites and attractions, beautiful scenery, specialty shops and boutiques, world-class spas, hotels and Bed & Breakfast Inns, and a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere.

Sonoma is located on Highway 12 near the Napa County line, approximately 50 miles northeast of San Francisco approximately 20 miles southeast of Santa Rosa. Location of other cities and communities can be found on the County Map .
