SONOMA COUNTY APPELLATIONS
Note: Appellation Map of Sonoma County used with permission of the Sonoma County Vitners. An appellation is a name of a region in which grapes for production are grown. Historically, the world's first vineyard classification system was introduced by the Hungarians in Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary in 1730. The world's second oldest appellation control was introduced in Portugal in 1756. The first Sonoma County Appellation was formed in 1982 and it was called the Sonoma Valley Appellation. Currently, there are 12 appellations in Sonoma County.
